Designed for Singapore Airlines and launched in late 2017. This business class seat has all the features passengers demand from a five star airline; a lie flat bed, direct aisle access, and connected centre seats creating a double bed.
Under the surface it has a unique construction method. Named the ‘Monocoque’, this is something JPA have developed and patented throughout the project. It’s an ambitious, lightweight all carbon fibre primary support structure which replaces the conventional aluminium construction of standard aircraft seats. This optimisation allows the benefit of creating additional luggage space under the seat, therefore removing the need centre overhead luggage bins. Without them, the cabin feels more open and of course saves precious weight.
My involvement on this program was in the later stages, to lead the development of the seat into production from JPA’s side.
